Best Cinema and Theatre in Wellington City

Local Recommendations from our My Guide Wellington team

As home to 'Wellywood' and the Weta film production and special effect companies responsible for the Lord of The Rings and Hobbit films, Wellington cinemas and theatres are used to holding their share of world film premieres.

For film buffs, the city offers both multiplex cinemas and old style movie theatres complete with bar and cafe and art deco architecture. The entertainment district of Courtenay Place is where you'll find a number of theatres. Theatres in Wellington are handily located all within a short distance of one another. The cultural quarter around the top of Kent Terrace, near Wakefield Street and  Courtenay Place are both places to head to. As well as all the bars and restaurants and being so close to Te Papa, you can easily spend a few days and nights just in this small, square half mile.   Comedy is big in Wellington, and you can catch big names in the large theatres, or up and coming acts in the smaller ones. Don't just limit a theatre visit to night time, either. During the day, some theatres run matinees and fringe productions. If evenings are your thing, head for the Waterfront around Te Papa, where you'll get a real theatrical atmosphere and also have plenty of places to choose from for a pre-show bite to eat.
