The New Zealand Portrait Gallery, housed in Shed 11 on Wellington's Waterfront is a significant visual archive of the many faces of New Zealand. From the celebrated to the seldom seen, the New Zealand Portrait Gallery defines the unique qualities of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
They are building, and hold in trust for the nation, a collection of portraits that reflects the history, development, events and personalities of our country. Growing the collection for the nation is an important aspect of their activities.
From poets to prime ministers, visionaries to villains, actors to activists - and many in between - the Gallery's images help us appreciate New Zealand's identity, culture and creativity. They help us understand ourselves and our origins.
