Directions to New Zealand Portrait Gallery
The New Zealand Portrait Gallery, housed in Shed 11 on Wellington's Waterfront is a significant visual archive of the many faces of New Zealand. From the celebrated to the seldom seen, the New Zealand Portrait Gallery defines the unique qualities of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
They are building, and hold in trust for the nation, a collection of portraits that reflects the history, development, events and personalities of our country. Growing the collection for the nation is an important aspect of their activities.
From poets to prime ministers, visionaries to villains, actors to activists - and many in between - the Gallery's images help us appreciate New Zealand's identity, culture and creativity. They help us understand ourselves and our origins.
The New Zealand Portrait Gallery keeps us in good company with New Zealanders across time, race, creed and gender, and provides visitors with powerful insights into our country. The portraits speak of who we are regardless of our origins.
Shed 11 can also be hired at the gallery's discretion for corporate events with the space to accommodate up to 350 people.
Admission is free to most exhibitons.
Open daily from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
The gallery is closed on on Good Friday and Christmas Day
