Built in the 1860s, Old St Paul's remains one of the capital's finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture. Consecrated in 1866 it was the first Anglican cathedral in Wellington and was designed by Reverend Frederick Thatcher who was then vicar of Thorndon.
Reverend Thatcher was an English born architect who settled in New Zealand and then trained as an Anglican minister in Auckland, and Old St Paul's is widely considered to be his best work as an architect.
The church is built from native timbers and features beautiful stained glass windows.
No longer a parish church but still consecrated, Old St Paul`s hosts a wide variety of cultural events, private and corporate functions, such as concerts, weddings, funerals and Award Ceremonies.
Inside Old St Paul’s you’ll find an exquisite Gift & Christmas shop featuring NZ made gifts and keepsakes, quirky kiwiana objects, jewellery, retro toys, crosses, rosaries and St Christopher's medals. The Old St Paul’s Christmas shop is a wonder world of Christmas goodies... with a brand new range of stunning Christmas decorations, hangers for your tree, nativity scenes, advent calendars, Christmas cards, beautiful gifts and much more. All proceeds of the Old St Paul’s gift and Christmas shop go towards crucial maintenance work.
Entry is free and a booklet explaining the church`s history and its major features is available to help visitors make the most of their visit. Artefacts and displays offer a glimpse of Wellington's early history.
Group guided tours are available by arrangement, and can be customised to your requirements.
Old St Paul's is an easy walk from central Wellington, just a few minutes from Parliament and the railway station, making it a great inclusion on a walking tour of the city's landmarks.
