Best Art Galleries in Wellington City

Local Recommendations from our My Guide Wellington team

With around a dozen Art Galleries in Wellington, it's not hard to find a bit of culture. Traditional Maori art sits alongside modern Kiwi efforts, as well as international collections and travelling exhibitions. A great way to spend a day.

Wellington Art Galleries tend to centre around the CBD. Wakefield and Cuba Streets have a couple of very interesting galleries, and it's also worth dropping into similar establishments on Ghuznee Street, Courtenay Place and Willis Street. The larger galleries will have gift shops attached, just perfect for picking up souvenirs. If you're after something totally unique, though, head to one of the smaller galleries, where you can often buy direct from the walls. Arthur Street and Webb Street have a couple of galleries that offer truly authentic Kiwi and Maori art. If you're down by the harbour, take a wander down Cable Street and Jervois Quay (New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts). Then try finishing up at Customhouse Quay, where there's a good concentration of sculpture, fine art and portraiture.
