Best Theatre in Wellington

Local Recommendations from our My Guide Wellington team

Wellington Theatres are enjoying a renaissance of late. There are over half a dozen large venues, all within the CBD, offering everything from opera, plays and dance, to films, performance and lectures.

Theatres in Wellington are handily located all within a short distance of one another. The cultural quarter around the top of Kent Terrace, near Wakefield Street, has three in spitting distance of one another. Courtenay Place is also somewhere to head for. As well as all the bars and restaurants along here, there's a cinema, two more theatres and the Opera House. Being so close to Te Papa, too, you can easily spend a few days and nights just in this small, square half mile. Comedy is big in Wellington, and you can catch big names in the large theatres, or up and coming acts in the smaller ones. Don't just limit a theatre visit to night time, either. During the day, some theatres run matinees and fringe productions. These offer not just something a bit different, but also savings for your wallet. If evenings are your thing, head for the Waterfront around Te Papa, where you'll get a real theatrical atmosphere and also have plenty of places to choose from for a pre-show bite to eat.
