Cable Car Museum
Wellington
Combine a trip to the Cable Car Museum with a pleasant (and free) stroll back down through the 25 hectares of Wellington's Botanic Gardens.
The Cable Car Museum is an award-winning attraction that presents the history of the city's much loved cable cars.
A 5 minute cable ride from Lambton Quay, provides you with fantastic views of the city and harbour and the chance to visit the fascinating Cable Car Museum.
The museum includes a movie recounting the construction story of the cable car, the winding mechanism that was operational from 1902 until 1978 and pulled the cars up via tunnels and the sharp incline, and two of the original grip cars.
The museum allows visitors to take a seat on the ‘Relentless Red Rattler’ – named because of the rattling noise it created when going up and down the steep incline and through the tunnels.
Visitors can also step back in time to when the original grip car took its first passengers. Dress up in the costume of the day and take a photo in front of the beautifully restored cable car.
