Description

Enjoy a day at New Zealand's only unfenced wildlife sanctuary, witnessing the efforts to restore the forest and conserve the country's most under-threat species. Spanning across the districts of Wairarapa and Tararua, the Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre is home to Manukura, meaning “of chiefly status” – the only White Kiwi in captivity! As well as other kiwi, you'll also discover Kokako, Takahe, Kakariki, Hihi, Campbel Teal, and Shore Dotterel amongst the range of endemic creatures. Watch 3 informative short films about restoration, the local Maori, and the captive breeding of kiwi. You'll witness the animals feeding and, in spring (September to December), you may even be lucky enough to catch the birth of a new kiwi chick in the purpose-built nursery! Pukaha Mount Bruce is a fascinating, family-friendly attraction, with an interactive gallery to entertain children of all sizes, including a tree trunk teeming with creepy-crawlies! If those don't put you off your food then enjoy lunch, or just a snack with terrific coffee, from the deck of the café overlooking the flightless Takahe!

Important Information

• Pukaha Mount Bruce is open year round, every day (except December 25) from 09:00. Last entry is 16:00, with gates closing at 17:00. Please dress warmly in winter with good footwear. Tracks are gravel. Umbrellas are available for customer use. Both the kiwi house and gallery are fully covered. All talks and feeds continue regardless of weather conditions.
