Description
Uncover the vibrant heartbeat of Wellington on a guided tour of the city. See the rugged coastline, visit the Weta Cave, and take a guided walk through the unique rainforest reserve of Otari-Wilton's Bush.
Be picked up from your meeting point and continue downtown past Te Papa and the QT hotel, seeing St Gerard’s church and monastery before driving up to the top of Mount Victoria to see spectacular views of Wellington’s city and harbor.
Move away from the city and take a look at the Italian fishing area hugging the rugged coastline of Island Bay. Stop at a museum in Owhiro Bay which displays some interesting history about the Wellington southern coastline.
Continue further around the coastline, passing Peter Jackson’s house and the local Wahine monument, where 52 people lost their lives on 10 April 1968 when the roll on/roll off ferry Wahine capsized after hitting Barrett’s Reef during a hurricane.
After lunch, drive to Weta Studios on the Miramar Peninsula for a Lord of the Rings experience at the Weta Cave. Meet Gollum, Lurtz, and some trolls from the Lord of The Rings and have a chance to purchase Lord of the Rings memorabilia and more photo opportunities outside.
Continuing along Wellington’s scenic coastline, we pass the beloved Oriental Bay before heading inland to the lush Otari-Wilton’s Bush, home to the city’s only public botanic garden dedicated solely to native New Zealand plants.
Step into a pocket of ancient Aotearoa as we explore this unique rainforest reserve — a glimpse of what Wellington looked like before European settlement. Receiving rainfall on over 125 days each year, Otari thrives with native flora and birdlife.
Your guide will lead you across the elevated Tree Top Walkway, 20 metres above the forest floor, offering a bird’s-eye view of towering rimu and tawa trees. Keep an eye out for native birds flitting through the canopy as you walk through this peaceful, untouched corner of Wellington.
After the Otari-Wilton Bush we drive through the inner city ending up at the bottom of the iconic Wellington cable car (which first carried passengers in 1902).
After you have travelled to the top in the cable car and visited the quaint museum at that end, you will have more breath-taking panoramic views of the harbour and city. Then it is an easy stroll through the lovely Botanic and Lady Norwood Rose Gardens, before seeing Parliament Buildings and visiting Old St Paul’s Cathedral – one of the world’s best examples of Gothic Revival architecture.
You are then dropped off wherever you wish within the city centre and we know you will take with you lasting fond memories of your visit to Wellington.
