Description
Begin with a pick-up in the city centre before heading downtown past Te Papa and notable landmarks like St Gerard’s church and monastery. Drive up Mount Victoria for panoramic views of Wellington’s city and harbour.
The tour continues along the rugged coastline of Island Bay, including a visit to a museum at Owhiro Bay showcasing southern coastline history. You will pass Peter Jackson’s house and the Wahine monument, marking the 1968 ferry disaster site.
After lunch, visit Weta Studios on Miramar Peninsula for a Lord of the Rings experience at the Weta Cave. Meet characters such as Gollum and Lurtz, and explore memorabilia and photo spots.
Drive along Wellington’s scenic Oriental Bay before heading inland to Otari-Wilton's Bush, New Zealand’s only public botanic garden dedicated exclusively to native plants. Explore the rainforest reserve with a guide, walking the Tree Top Walkway 20 metres above the forest floor, observing native trees like rimu and tawa and birdlife.
The tour ends with a ride on the historic Wellington cable car to the top station where you can visit the museum and enjoy harbour views. Walk through the Botanic and Lady Norwood Rose Gardens, then see the Parliament Buildings and Old St Paul’s Cathedral, a prime example of Gothic Revival architecture.
