Weather Overview

Known as 'Windy Wellington', the capital city can often feel colder than it actually is due to the north-westerly winds prevailing in the city. Sea breezes occasionally occur along the coast during summer.

During the summer months of December to February, the temperature tends to rise to between 19C and 24C with 30C being the exception. The city enjoys about 2000 hours of sunshine every year placing in in amongst the top sunshine regions of New Zealand.

As you would expect, the winter months of June to August bring more unsettled weather to the region. You can expect maximum daytime temperatures of between 10C and 14C with some early morning frosts.
