When is the best time to visit?

The summer months, December to February, are the warmer months where the temperature reaches between 19C and 24C with the occasional 30C day. The city is known as ‘Windy Wellington’ for a reason so bring layered clothing and an umbrella, especially in the winter months when the weather is more unsettled.

How do I get there?

Wellington is less than an hour's flight from anywhere in New Zealand. The airport is served well by international airlines. If you are driving, State Highways 1 and 2 come into Wellington. Alternatively, car ferries can be taken from Picton on the South Island and take about 3.5 hours.

How do I get from Wellington Airport into the town centre?

Taxis into the city centre should cost no more than NZ$40. The Super Shuttle is a minibus shared passenger service that should cost about $20 for a couple. The Airport Flyer bus costs $8.50 one way into the city centre per person

Where do I get the cable car from?

The cable car is located on Cable Car Lane off Lambton Quay in the CBD.

What’s the currency?

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) is divided into 100 cents. Coins consist of 10c, 20c and 50c. Notes consist of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.

What’s the Time Zone?

Wellington is 12 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and two hours ahead of Sydney. Clocks are put forward one hour for daylight saving lasting from October to March.

What clothing should I bring?

What are the electrical specifications?

The electrical current is 230/240 volts, 50 hertz. Many hotels provide 110 volt AC sockets for electrical razors. Power outlets accept flat, 2 or 3 pin plugs.
