Best Hostels in Wellington City
Local Recommendations from our My Guide Wellington team
This city was made for Wellington Backpackers. Choose from new-build CBD hostels, with all mod cons, or even cheaper dorms, just south, in Te Aro. If you're on a budget, Wellington makes it easy to stretch the cash that little bit further.
Backpackers in Wellington really are spoiled for choice. Because it's a popular destination for those exploring the whole country, there's a good infrastructure in place in Wellington, for those travelling on a budget. Wakefield Street, The Terrace and Willis Street have some state of the art hostels. All have internet access, single, double or dorm accommodation, plus plenty of communal areas. Bars, TV rooms, kitchens and even swimming pools, are features of some. To the south, Taranaki Street and Vivian Street offer even better value for money, if you don't mind the walk into town. Mount Victoria, around Kent Terrace and Brougham Street, have a couple of hostels away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD. Pipitea, to the north of the city, is cheaper because it's further out, but transport links are good. The average age of the backpacker is rising all the time, and many hostels can now give three-star hotels a run for their money on comfort, facilities and, of course, price.
